Short answers to the questions people ask most about Mentora Maps. The last section covers what to try when something looks wrong.
Do I need a Google Maps key?
No. The map is OpenStreetMap through Leaflet, and neither needs a key or a card. There is no quota to watch and nothing to redo the day a provider changes its prices.
Will the map work with my cookie banner?
Yes. The map images come from OpenStreetMap’s tile servers, so the visitor’s browser talks to them and they see an IP address. Where a consent banner is installed, the map waits: until the visitor accepts, it shows a notice and loads nothing, not a single tile. Complianz and iubenda are recognised automatically.
Banners do not agree on which category a map belongs to. You choose it in Settings → Map and list, under Waits for consent to. With no banner at all, the map loads straight away.
Where do the coordinates come from?
From the address, looked up with Nominatim while you edit the activity. You can also drag the marker, and the address fields follow it. Nominatim is only ever called from the administration: your visitors never reach it.
How many activities can the free version publish?
Twenty. Drafts and paused activities do not count. Beyond that, activities are saved as drafts: nothing is lost, and they go online the day you make room or move to Pro.
Can I hide an activity without deleting it?
Yes. Each activity has a Map visibility box. Paused keeps everything, data, photos and position, and hides the activity from the map, the list and the search. One click brings it back.
Can I bring in what I have in another plugin?
If it exports a CSV, yes, with Pro. The import shows the first rows of your file, lets you say which column is what, and runs a dry run before writing anything. There are ready-made profiles for WP Go Maps and Google Business. The free version shows the screen, so you can see how it works before deciding.
There is a small badge on my map. Can I remove it?
The badge sits in a corner of the map, next to the OpenStreetMap credit. In the free version it carries our name and a link. You can keep the name without the link at any time, in Settings → Map and list → Our badge. Removing the badge altogether is part of Pro.
Does it work with my theme?
It should, block themes included. The activity page is not a template fighting yours: it goes inside your theme’s content, with your header, your footer and your widths.
Does it work with a multilingual site?
Yes. Activities are an ordinary custom post type and categories an ordinary taxonomy, so WPML, Polylang and TranslatePress all see them once you switch them on in their own settings.
The plugin ships a wpml-config.xml that already says what to do with each field: the address, the town and the labels of your links are copied once and then yours to change; coordinates, phone numbers, opening hours and photos stay identical in every language. Ratings and statistics are left alone, so one language never overwrites another’s.
The plugin itself is written in English and ships with an Italian translation.
What does the plugin send to other services?
It does not phone home and does not collect statistics of its own unless you turn them on with Pro. A visitor’s position, when they ask for it with a click, is used in their own browser to draw a dot and work out distances, and is gone when the page is closed.
The services it talks to are listed in full in the plugin’s readme, with their terms and privacy policies, so you can add them to your own privacy policy.
When something looks wrong
The map does not appear at all. Most often this is the consent banner doing its job. Accept cookies and reload; if the map appears, that was it.
The map is grey. The tiles have not arrived. Check the browser console for blocked requests: a content security policy or an aggressive optimisation plugin is the usual cause.
A marker is in the wrong place. The address was generic. Open the activity and drag the marker.
Several markers sit on the same spot. They are drawn in a small ring around it so each one can be clicked. The saved coordinates do not change, and directions still point at the real address.
«Open now» is wrong. It is worked out in the visitor’s browser, from their own clock. Check the hours on the activity, and remember that the free version only shows today.
The styling is off after an update. Reload past the cache with Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac, and clear the cache of any caching plugin.
WordPress will not install the plugin. PHP is older than 8.2: see the installation guide.
